Back in 2015 Matthew Thebault Stonemasons were privileged to work on a truly unique project that went on to win multiple awards and feature on Channel 4’s Grand Designs.

Le Petit Fort is a modern home constructed within the walls of the earlier building. The architecture taps into the historical context of the location resulting in truly unique building at one with its surroundings.

Using nearly 100 tons of Jersey Granite, the three-story building spans 472 square metres and is surrounded by solid perimeter wall.

The devil’s in the detail

Tradition meets modern

It was a priority from the outset that a traditional approach was needed when it came to the stonemasonry, ensuring the building remained in keeping and loyal to its historic legacy. This dove tailed perfectly with Matt’s approach to his craft, ensuring ‘new’ met ‘old’ seamlessly.

One of the key elements embraced by Matt was the need to ‘dress’ each and every piece of granite individually. This consists of knocking off lumps and bumps so it sits neatly with those around it, a painstaking process that requires skill and patience. It was processes like this – coupled with Matts sheer in depth knowledge of his craft that helped create such a successful final result that rightly caught the attention of TV production teams and industry bodies alike.
